Koala in native eucalyptus habitat

Project highlights

  • Approximately 40 ha of environmental plantings established over former grazing land
  • ~40,000 ACCUs to be generated over 25 years, with a 100 year permanence period
  • Koala confirmed on site. Project area mapped as 'populations for immediate investment' in the NSW Koala Strategy
  • Species planted reflect local Plant Community Types (PCTs), including primary and secondary Koala feed trees
  • Project area lies adjacent to Doyles River State Forest and contiguous with Bulga State Forest, with significant numbers of threatened and iconic species present including Koala, Greater Glider, Spotted-tailed Quoll, Yellow-bellied Glider and Parma Wallaby

Project location & details

NSW mid-north coast

The site is located at Doyles River NSW 2446, approximately 50 km north-west of Taree and 13 km north-west of Elands on the NSW mid-north coast.

The property area is 130.5 ha in total, with approximately 40 ha included in the replanting project. The site lies directly adjacent to Doyles River State Forest, and between Biriwal Bulga National Park and Cottan-Bimbang National Park.

Formerly used to graze cattle, the replanting project (ERF186709) was registered on 9 October 2023 under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings — FullCAM) Methodology Determination 2014 (Compilation No. 2). A permanence period of 100 years has been applied.

Planting & seeding

Stocking & species

Planting within the project area was established to ensure a stocking density of more than 200 stems per hectare, sufficient to achieve forest cover. Plantings were supplemented by direct seeding of tree and other species.

Species selection reflects the Plant Community Types (PCTs) of the local area, prioritising Koala feed and use trees alongside complementary native species that support broader ecological function.

Beyond carbon

Project co-benefits

Restored local environment

Re-establishment of local vegetation communities and species, including Koala feed and use trees.

Threatened species habitat

Improved and increased habitat for threatened species including Koala, Greater Glider, and others.

Water quality improvement

Improved water quality through increased vegetation cover and reduced erosion across the site.

Habitat corridor expansion

Environmental plantings adjacent to Doyles River State Forest increase available habitat in the local area.

Ongoing stewardship

Site management & monitoring

Site management is regular and ongoing. Livestock grazing is restricted through the erection and maintenance of internal and external property fencing, ensuring livestock will not affect the project's ability to achieve and maintain forest cover. Weed control activities are completed including hand removal, slashing, and spot-spraying of identified weed infestations. Fire breaks are regularly maintained throughout the property.

Monitoring program

Long-term ecological monitoring

Regular site inspections to assess establishment and health
Annual 360° photo point monitoring at multiple locations across the site
Flora monitoring using standard 20 m × 20 m plot surveys
Baseline monitoring conducted prior to planting to establish reference conditions
